The Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization founded in 1963, to perpetuate the memory of athletes, male or female, who have brought lasting fame and recognition to the State Area through their athletic achievements. The PASHOF also includes individuals who have brought similar recognition to Pennsylvania through their contributions to sports in general in managerial, promotional, or other dedicated services. The South Central Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame supports this mission by granting recognition to men and women from the respective communities whose accomplishments in the field of sports and athletics fulfill these criteria.
The South Central Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame was founded at the urging of William “Bill” Minnick, a former head football coach at Shippensburg High School and ardent sports enthusiast in this area. Enlisting the aid of like-minded individuals from the Carlisle, Chambersburg, Shippensburg and Waynesboro areas, an initial organizational meeting was held in October 1979, at the Shippensburg Inn, Shippensburg, PA.
Today, the South Central Chapter has 137 dues-paying members and continues to grow. A format for meetings has been established to include chapter activities, speakers, films, etc. The Chapter also hosts an annual banquet for the induction of individuals to its Hall of Fame and makes recommendations of individuals for admission to the Pennsylvania State Hall of Fame. The inaugural group of seven was inducted into the SCCPASHOF on December 4, 1980. Through the past 41 years, the South Central Chapter has inducted 225 individuals into its Hall of Fame. Seven of these individuals have since been inducted into the Pennsylvania State Hall of Fame.
In addition to its Hall of Fame, the SCCPASHOF works to provide scholarship funding to deserving local high school athletes. To that end, since 2001, the South Central Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame has awarded over $51,000 towards this endeavor.
Through its meetings, the SCCPASHOF hopes to present a variety of programs to interest and entertain its members, while adding to their knowledge and appreciation of all sports, and we encourage all members to actively participate in these events. The SCCPASHOF goal is to promote good will, fellowship, and mutual respect among the athletes and sport fans in its communities.
