Retired Executive Director Dale Hammer Passes
In Memory of Dale Hammer
September 12, 1937 - November 29, 2024 (age 87)
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our retired Executive Director, Dale Hamer, whose outstanding contributions to the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame spanned over 60 years. Dale played a pivotal role in the growth and success of our organization, and his unwavering dedication to honoring Pennsylvania’s athletic achievements will never be forgotten.
Dale began his officiating career in 1962 with high school basketball and expanded to officiating football in 1964. Over the decades, he officiated more than 900 high school and college basketball and football games. In 1978, Dale joined the National Football League, officiating over 400 games, including 20 playoff games and two Super Bowls. He later worked in the NFL replay booth, overseeing 180 additional games. As President of the NFL Referee’s Association from 1996-1999, Dale left a lasting impact on the sport he loved.
Beyond his professional career, Dale was a tireless advocate for Pennsylvania's sports community. He was inducted into several Halls of Fame, including the Robert J. Cloherty Western Chapter of the PA Sports Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania State Sports Hall of Fame. His illustrious career and induction into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2012 exemplify his exceptional contributions to sports. Dale’s passion, dedication, and leadership were unmatched, and his legacy will forever be cherished.
Funeral Service Details:
We extend our deepest condolences to Dale’s family during this difficult time. Family, friends, and colleagues are invited to honor Dale Hamer’s remarkable life during visitation on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Charles W. Trenz Funeral Home, Inc., 11110 Frankstown Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15235. A second visitation will take place on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM immediately followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM at the same location.
