Founded in 1963, the Pennsylvania State Sports Hall of Fame's mission is to perpetuate the memory of athletes, male or female, who have brought lasting fame and recognition to Pennsylvania through their athletic achievements and/or through their contributions to sports in general; in managerial, promotional, or other dedicated services.
The South Central Chapter of the PA State Sports Hall of Fame puts forward members of their HOF for consideration of induction into the State program. Currently, there are six South Central Chapter inductees who have attained that honor. Read their bios below.

Carl was a 2-year letterman at Shippensburg University in 1951-52. He also served as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army in 1952-54, where he graduated first in his officers training class. In 1955-58 He attended Dickinson Law school, graduating summa cum laude. In 1986 he led a public-private coalition that purchased the Pittsburgh Pirates from the Galbreath family to keep the team in Pittsburgh. Carl served as General Counsel until elected President and Chief Operating Officer of the Pirates. It was during Carl’s tenure that the Pirates had three Division Championships. In 1992 he was named President and Chief Operating officer of the Florida Marlins

Jack had a very good NFL nine year career with the Buffalo Bills, 1962 – 1969 as a center; 1965 League All-Star, 1964-65 All-League, AFL Champions and 1961 Rookie of the Year. He was also named to the Bills Silver Anniversary Team.
Jack was a football player and wrestler at Syracuse University in 1957-61. In football Syracuse played in the Orange and Cotton Bowls and Jack was named All-East, a third team All-American and played in the Blue-Grey Game. At Hanover High School he won two Wrestling District Championship, and one Regional third. He was National Prep Heavyweight Wrestling Champion and a National Football Player of the Year.

Tom was a Major League Baseball player 1980-1990 and was named “Player of the Week” in the American League during his Rookie Season. Carl singled in his first at bat playing for the Detroit Tigers during their World Series Championship season in 1984. He played every position that year but pitcher and was named Sports Magazine Utility Player of the Year in 1985 and again 1986. Tom played eleven consecutive seasons in the American League; nine with Detroit, one with the New York Yankees and one with the Indians. His career batting average was .246 in 1,336 games.

Carl played three sports at Shippensburg high school and went on to earn All-Southern Conference honors at the University of North Carolina, 1945 – 49. In 1949, he also played with the Chicago Bears. Carl became a Coach and the Athletic Director, Hickory high school in North Carolina in 1951 and 1952. He then became an Assistant Coach at West Chester State College in Pennsylvania from 1953 thru 1965. At West Chester, Carl was a Professor and Head Football Coach (1965-72) with a 52 – 15 record. His teams played in the Tangerine Bowl in 1966 and 1967, earned the Lambert Cup in 1967, and were Pennsylvania Conference Champions in 1966, 1969 and 1971. Cark also served as President of the Pennsylvania Conference Football Association for two years.

Sam was a graduate of Steelton High School and Dickenson College, both in Pennsylvania. At Dickenson, Sam excelled in football as a running back, setting records for rushing yards, touchdowns, total points and yards per carry. He joined the Navy and served during World War II from 1944 to 1946. Sam enjoyed officiating high school football and basketball games and he was honored to be selected as an official for a Big 33 game. Sam was also very active in his church and community.

1984 - Inducted into the PA STATE SPORTS HALL OF FAME
A football player, Clyde graduated from Carlisle High School in Carlisle, PA and Purdue University. A cornerback, Washington was drafted in the 10th round by the Cleveland Browns. He chose the AFL over the NFL and signed with the Boston Patriots (1960-1961) and played for the New York Jets (1963-1965). In five seasons, he played in 63 games and had nine interceptions.
